How to Obtain a Taxicab Driver Permit for the City of Los Angeles

step one - company

To obtain a taxicab driver license you must be sponsored by one of LA City's franchised taxicab companies. (Click here for company contact information.) Obtain a two-sided DRIVER/ATTENDANT PERMIT APPLICATION form from your company, which has been signed by an authorized company representative. step two - dmv

Go to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and obtain a complete driving history report (H6) issued within the last 30 days. Limited driving history reports ("K4") or reports obtained online are NOT acceptable.

step three - ladot

Appear before LADOT and present the following:

  • Completed DRIVER / ATTENDANT PERMIT APPLICATION form with companyrepresentative's original, wet signature
  • Complete, original H6 (DMV driving report) issued within the last 30 days – must state "End" on last page of report
  • Payment of non-refundable processing fee of $106.00*

*Different fees apply for (unexpired) renewal ($151) or replacement ($57) permits. Permits may be renewed up to 60 days prior to expiration. All fees are subject to change.

Note: your record will be checked for any outstanding parking tickets, which must be resolved prior to the issuance of any driver permit.

step four – driver exam

Cartoon TaxiAt the time of your initial processing by LADOT you will be scheduled for the Taxicab Driver Examination, which is held every Wednesday at 8:00 a.m.. You must bring the following to the exam:

  • Valid California Driver's License or other acceptable identification
  • Current Thomas Guide™ for the City of Los Angeles
  • Pen or pencil

Step five – ladot

If you pass the taxicab driver examination, you must return to LADOT within 15 days of the exam, where you will be fingerprinted (eff. 12/01/14 fee will increase from $76 to $88) and issued a conditional permit & ID badge ($5.00 fee). You must present the following original documents (no copies!):x

  • Valid California Driver's License
  • Proof of right to work
  • Controlled substance test results or, for renewals and replacements only, a drug enrollment certificate

Note: all permits are conditional pending criminal history review; permits are the property of LADOT and must be returned upon expiration, in order to renew/replace, and in the event of cancellation or revocation.


If you are denied a permit or your permit is revoked, you have the right to appeal the decision to the Board of Taxicab CoTmmissioners. You must file your appeal in person within 10 days of the date of denial or revocation.


In order to obtain a new (expired), renewal (unexpired), or replacement* permit you must present a new application, new H6, and all documents discussed above. If your last permit expired more than three years ago, you must re-take the taxicab driver examination and be fingerprinted once again.

*a police report is required to replace a lost or stolen permit
